President’s Notes – December 2017

Well, as we approach another Christmas Season, I seriously don’t know where time goes!

As we all get ready for this busy season, I hope you get some time to enjoy things like Santa Claus Parades (is there anything cuter than kids all bundled up waiting to see Santa?), evening shopping and all things peppermint.

On October 25th, we had a BOSS workshop at Westwind Inn in beautiful Buckhorn. This was another well attended event where people learned from our panel; Tonya Kraan, Strexer Harrop & Associates;  Tom Labranche, Village Pet Food & Supply; & Scott Matheson, CIBC; on how to network effectively. We followed up our panel with about 45 minutes of speed-networking and everyone was enjoying themselves so much it was hard to stop. The owners and staff at Westwind were fantastic hosts and the food was incredible. Just another reminder of the depth and variety of hospitality choices in this area.

The Awards of Excellence Gala was held on November 3rd at Elmhirst’s Resort, and from the very enjoyable networking portion – made even better by the piano & violin playing of the Duketow sisters, to the final award of the evening, it was another wonderful night of recognizing our local businesses.

A huge “Thank You!” to everyone who attended, made a nomination, sponsored an award or donated an auction item, we couldn’t make this happen without you. Click here for a full list of the evening’s finalists and award recipients.

Our next Business After Hours is Wednesday December 13th at Kawartha Lakes Construction. This has become an annual event for KLC, and they combine it with a food/toy drive. We hope to see you there for some great food, friends and just getting into the Christmas spirit. Click here to register.

Your Chamber is always working on behalf of our business community, and some recent proposed changes to sign bylaws may affect you. We will keep you posted on what this may mean and what changes may occur. Feel free to contact your local municipality to ask about changes to signage rules.

And, with the changes to the Employment Standards Act now passed, our plan is to put on a workshop or seminar on how to cope with these changes. We were not in favour of making these changes so quickly, however, now that it is done, we will try to get you the best tools and information so you can continue to thrive.

Remember to shop local as much as possible this Christmas. There are wonderful and unique Christmas gifts in our local communities: from gift certificates for services and restaurants, to great fashion, to home décor and so much more.

As always, watch for your NewsFlashes and upcoming events. Thanks to Sherry and staff who work so hard to make things run smoothly and always greet people with a friendly face.

Thank you all for an amazing 2017, and may 2018 go beyond your wildest expectations.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone.

“Be so good, they can’t ignore you.”
