President’s Notes – February 2018

I hope that everyone enjoyed a happy & healthy Christmas Season!

Our annual Christmas Business After Hours was on Wednesday December 13th at Kawartha Lakes Construction. This has become an annual event for them, and they combine it with a food/toy drive. Once again, it was a fantastic night, with great food, company and the coolest trees that their staff had made!

The January BAH was a Lakefield ‘HOP’, and many braved the weather to come and learn of, or visit, four local businesses. Thanks to Salon Sorella, Robyn’s Nest Photography & Beauty, Your Body You, and Lakefield Pantry for a wonderful night of networking.

In the last newsletter we mentioned the proposed changes to the Peterborough County Sign By-law, which we were concerned about. Sherry Boyce-Found and I, along with many of our members, and other community groups, attended the County Council meeting in January, and after many fantastic delegations, the Council voted to take some time and put together a committee to address the current sign issues, and come up with some alternatives. We are looking at this as a ‘win’, and will keep you posted on this issue. See the Chamber’s presentation slides and speaking notes.

2018 is a year of elections, both Municipal and Provincial, so watch for announcements on All Candidates Meetings, and please come out and hear what your local politicians have to say.

Many people don’t realize all of the advocacy work that the Chamber is also involved in, and that’s where I think we are best serving our members.

I am grateful for a strong Marketing Committee that has given us a fresh web presence, and also introduced some new marketing strategies that keep us relevant.

Thank you to all of the various committees that make up our Chamber and work so hard to ensure you are being represented and informed, and all of this they do as volunteers! Amazing!

As for me, this is the end of my year as President. It’s been a wonderful experience, lots of work, but also lots of reward…. which tend to go hand-in-hand. I am so very proud of this area, and all the wonderful and unique things we have to offer. I’m also so thankful for all the small business owners who work tirelessly not only running your own businesses, but also contributing to our communities in ways too many to mention here… you are all superheroes!

As always, watch for your NewsFlashes and upcoming events. Thanks to Sherry and the office staff who work so hard to make things run smoothly and always greet people with a friendly face.
