The 2015 Young Professional is Lisa Besseling, of Stony Lake Furniture Co. Her nominator says,
“This is proof that if you actively follow your dream you can in fact succeed phenomenally well at it, regardless of your youth. By enthusiastically embracing all aspects of owning and running a business, it has become a destination for locals and seasonal residents.”
It was a risk buying Stony Lake Furniture Co. five years ago, and with no retail experience there was a lot to learn. It took a couple of years to move all of the stock that was in inventory, and give the space and product offering her own look and unique styling – one that would push the design envelope but keep it appealing to area clients.
While it wasn’t a surprise that winter months would be slower, Lisa now better understands the retail cycle and when to buy product. In addition to the retail component, design services are offered. This helps to keep the business viable year round. So much so that 2015 was the best year yet, with twice as much design work as in 2014. In fact, the volume is almost to the point where a junior designer is needed.
Various social media platforms are used to showcase product and design skills. Style at Home magazine has published three articles featuring her design work and she has appeared on Steven & Chris. HGTV has borrowed furniture for two of their series.
Lisa has the following advice for other young professionals:
“Trust your gut and take the jump. The worst that can happen is that you fail, but at least you tried and you are still learning from the experience for the next time you try.”
